College Internships

Join the IROEC CommuniTree as an intern or extended-term volunteer!  The IROEC is an approved internship site through multiple schools. Students receive college credit for hours spent completing specific projects at the IROEC that align with their educational objectives and career goals.

Additionally, we welcome long-term volunteers of all ages.  To apply for an internship or long-term volunteer position please send your resume and cover letter to info@iroec.org.  All volunteers are required to complete BSA Youth Protection Training and a background check.

Required Qualifications

  • Desire to learn about permaculture, orchard management and educational gardens
  • Highly motivated self-starter
  • Positive flexible and resilient attitude
  • Ability to be present when scheduled and ability to call ahead if unable to be present

 Desired Qualifications

  • Background in education, horticulture, environmental science, permaculture, nutrition or related field
  • Experience working with children and youth

Volunteer Projects

Education and Outreach

  • Ecology, permaculture and sustainability programs for students K-12
  • Outreach efforts at farmer’s markets and community events
  • Creation of educational signage
  • Development of new lesson plans
  • Lead evening programs such as square dancing, night hikes and chaperoning

Agroforestry

  • Ecological pest management
  • Wildlife monitoring
  • Invasive species management
  • Mulching, pruning, fertilizing and weeding
  • Maintaining compost system
  • Monitoring and adjusting aquaponics system
  • Beekeeping
  • Recruit and lead youth service teams

Internships may be crafted to align with the specific educational objectives and interests of student interns/ docents.  Areas of specialization can be chosen from the areas listed above.
