Health & Safety

We see thousands of students a year at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center, and their Health and Safety is of the utmost importance. If your student/child will need some special attention during outdoor activities, please see below for more information.

If you have questions, please contact us at 714-923-3191.

CampDocs

The IROEC uses an online system, “CampDocs”, to collect all health records, waivers, and student code of conduct forms for those who attend our science camp programs.

CampDocs was designed by camp doctors, nurses and directors to provide a secure, easy-to-use, web-based solution that manages health forms, allergies, medications and illness/injury tracking for camps. CampDocs also provides camp health staff with instant access to vital medical information, decreases the time and energy spent during initial camper check-in, reduce risk and liability, and helps keep safety at the forefront of camp operations.

Each school that attends our overnight science camp program will use CampDocs to fill out the following forms (available in English and Spanish):

  1. Recreational Waiver
  2. Code of Conduct and Discipline Policy
  3. Health and Permission Form
  4. Over the Counter Medication Form
  5. Medication Information Form

Each parent/guardian will be asked for an email to set up the online account for Camp Docs. Once the school sends the complete class list to the IROEC we will send out invitations to the parents/guardians to begin their students’ profiles.

We ask that all forms are completed 10 days prior to your student’s arrival so our medical team can review them and provide the best care during their stay. In the back of the Parent/Guardian Guide you can find a CampDocs FAQ to help with any questions you may have.

If you have any questions for CampDocs please contact their support team at help@campdoc.com or call 734.636.1000 anytime from 8:00am – 5:00pm ET.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a common situation at the IROEC. The following guidelines and instructions will help make sure your student has a successful Outdoor Science School experience.

For a healthy and safe experience, students with diabetes need to meet the following conditions to attend:

  • Diabetic students need to understand their diabetic condition, how it affects their eating and exercise actions, and be able to communicate their condition to the adults around them.
  • Diabetic students should be able to test their own blood levels.
  • Diabetic students must be able to administer their own insulin injections. If the student cannot administer their own injections a parent or guardian may administer. IROEC medical staff are not permitted to inject students.

Carb Counting

The IROEC cannot provide carbohydrate counts for meals. If precise carbohydrate counts of food eaten by your student is required, you will need to assemble and pre-package those meals yourself. Please label with the following: School Name, Student Name, and any Heating/Storage instructions.

Your student may have been living with this condition for awhile or they may be new to managing it. Please call or email the IROEC for any questions or concerns you may have. Our management team and medical staff are available to talk about your student’s specific situation. Whatever the situation we are here to help and provide a great experience.

Bedwetting/Incontinence

This is very common in students who attend camp. Should you have this concern, here is what we can do to make the situation a good one:

Prevention

Some simple preventative measures we can take include: limiting liquid intake after dinner, waking the student up in the middle of the night to use the restroom, placing them on the bottom bunk to make it easier to get out of bed and use the restroom.

Nighttime sleeping aids like pull-ups are good options as well.

Discretion

We can discretely pull your student aside and talk with him/her about the potential problem before it happens, so that he/she feels comfortable enough to confide in his/her instructor should he or she need help.

If incontinence does occur, we will discretely bag up the affected clothing/bags and wash them during the day when the group is out of the cabins. By the time anyone returns to the cabins, we will have the cleaned items back in time for bed.
